Philadelphia – Drexel topped American University, 15-4, in the Dragons' season finale at Vidas Field. Senior Kerry Kelly (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) scored three goals and tied a school record with five assists while fellow senior Emily Hoesch (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) added three goals and three assists. The win improved Drexel's record to 12-5 on the season and matched the program record for victories in a season. American dropped to 8-8 on the season.
The game was tightly contested early as the teams each scored a pair of goals in the first ten minutes. Finally with 12:53 remaining Kelly scored an unassisted goal that kick-started the Drexel offense as they strung together six more unanswered goals over the last 12 minutes before halftime to lead the stunned Eagles, 9-2 at the break. The Dragons' relentless attack continued in the second half as six different players scored before American answered as Drexel stretched its lead to 14-2 late in the game before holding on to win, 15-4.
The game was the final time Drexel's two leaders in points, Kelly and Hoesch, donned a Drexel uniform. Kelly needed three points in the game to break Hoesch's single-season points record as Kelly's eight points shattered the record and ended her season with 76. Kelly earned a share of the only assist record she did not own coming into the game: assists in a game. Kelly's five assists against American tied the single-game record held by Jen Brandl who registered five assists against Hofstra in 1991. Kelly's 33 assists this season bested the previous record of 23 set last season by teammate Katie Bradley (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts). Her 94 career assists are 32 more than the school's second-best total of 62 posted by Hoesch. Hoesch leaves Drexel with the school record in career goals (189), career points (251) and single-season goals (54). Also playing in her final game was senior Kelly Benzing (Severna Park, Md./Mt. De Sales). A three-year starter on defense, Benzing was the leader of a defensive unit that ranked in the top 10 nationally in scoring defense. She caused two turnovers and picked up two groundballs and a draw control in her final game.
For the game, Lauren LaBella (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) made seven saves as she tied the school record with her 12th win in the cage this season. Kristine Vida made 10 stops for American before being replaced by Frankie Solomon who made a pair of saves.
